Midhirst School

FANCY DRESS BALL. There was a largo and interested gathering at) the Midhiist Public Hall on Friday, the hall being especially decried for the occasion of the school children’s fancy dress ball. This' proved in every way a success, and a Credit to the promoters. About 40 young competitors took part, in the parade, which elicited!'favourable comment 1 by the onlookers, many of the dresses being original and attractive in design. Mrs, and Miss Burke, acted a 3 adjudicators, an<j their task in selecting the winners wag by no means an easy one. The prizewinners were: — Most original costume—Native of New Zealand, Reg. Goble; Wasp, Irene Hamblyn; best fancy costume: Little Butterfly, (boy) Jackie Cookson ; (girl) Frolic. Annie Boniface; (boy) Spring Chicken, Stan Carter; (boy) Folly, Twinkle and Bill Guthrie; special prizes (girl), Clock Tower, Jean McMeekan; (boy) peanuts, Walter Ludlanii; (girl), “If Winter comes will Spring be far behind,” Lena Tapp; (boys) Golliwogs, Billy Mail and Ernie Bound; (boy) Red, White and Blue, Buster Jenkins; outsiders, Little Fairy, K. Betts. Other competitors were; Colin Jury (sailor), Archibald Thompson (sailor). Emily Bound (Red Cross nurse), Mavi s Goble (curtains), Burton Carter (footballer), Theodore Cookson (goblin), Thelma Cook (pink rose), Bryant Jenkins (Hindoo), Milton Jenkins (Chinese bandit), Nina Burton (court gentleman), Loma Burton (box of chocolates), Ronald Burton (court gentleman), Percy Harkness (Hbdder and Tolley’s agent), Sylvia Edwards (daffodil), Dickson Harkness (jester). An interesting ceremony took place during the evening’when Mrs J, W. Mail and Mis s Surman, who had, helped in. the dam*, practices, were th© recipients of a presentation (being a gift of money), Little Jean McMeakan gracefully making th© gift. The recipients suitably replied. Mr G. Smith’ (chairman of the , Committee) appropriately proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies’ oom- ' mittee, lady teachers (Misses Fugle, Stiller- and Kilpatrick), to those

ladies who provided the refreshments, and to all who contributed to such a successful evening. This wag carried by acclamation.
