PETROL FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES

Sir, —I have noticed correspondence concerning an allocation of oil fuel required by Mr T. G. McNeill for preparing ground for an area of wheat, which, it is stated was refused by the oil fuel controller, and also a later reference to a contractor’s difficulties. It is unfortunate indeed if the sowing of an area of wheat has been denied Mr McNeill owing to his inability to secure oil fuel for his tractor. I think this was a grievance that was ventilated some time ago, but which I understand was rectified when the circumstances were further explained. In fairness to the oil fuel controller and the advisory committee, I wish to state that every endeavour is made to meet the requirements of all legitimate users and farmers’ applications are always given every care and consideration so that there should be no hindrance to essential cultivation. I know that it is a continuous job of the advisory committee in reviewing farmers’ requirements, which, owing to weather and other conditions, are for ever changing, and I am quite sure that a review is never refused. This council would be pleased to inquire into Mr McNeill’s complaint if he would give permission to the oil fuel controller to hand over his file for inspection so that the matter can be rectified. We hope that this will be done, for an equitable distribution of oil fuel is most desirable, especially for the cultivation of ground for essential crops.
