GUMBOOTS FOR CHILDREN
Sir,—At the last meeting of the Southland Education Board I made certain references to the position regarding the present availability of gumboots for children. Children’s gumboots (gumboots under size 2) are not available and have not been available for a very long time. Youths’ and maids’ kneegums (sizes 2 to 6) are procurable by industrial users when a permit has been granted. Obviously, farmers’ children wearing these sizes are usually able to qualify for a pair; but just as obviously, there are no gums for the children who need smaller sizes. If your correspondents had taken the trouble to read the published report of the meeting they should know that I made no reference to a black market. Actually, the possible existence of a black market was suggested by your correspondent—Mr McLean. d. a. McDonald.
