SOUTHLAND RUGBY TEAM

Sir—l read with interest “Fan’s” letter in Tuesday morning’s issue. Like him and most other sportsmen, I do not want to see the Ranfurly Shield leave Southland just for the lack of trying out new players. It has always been a recognized fact that Southland could field a set of forwards up to the best provincial standard, but until the years just preceding the war we did not field the backs to support their good work. I have seen most of the Southland football this season and I am sure this province can field a team that will prove a w'orthy successor to the 1939 side. I consider that Cleveland (Pirates) is the pick of the available full-backs, Irwin and McLean have the speed, Sutherland and Grace are players of class, and Weavers has turned on some excellent performances this season. I would not leave Watson out—he is a heady young player who will improve greatly with further experience in representative matches. May I then suggest the following to represent Southland against Otago in the return match:— Full-back.—Cleveland. Three-quarters. — Irwin, McLean, Sutherland. Five-eighths.—Watson, Grace. Half-back. —Weavers. Front-row. —Stewart, Mcßae, Cameron. Middle-row.—Budd, Rouxell, Purdue, Newell. Back-row.—Thornton. KIWI.
