SOCKS FOR HOME GUARDSMEN

Issue Of One Pair Home Guardsmen are to be issued with one pair of socks each by the Army authorities. It will be remembered that the question of issuing socks to Guardsmen was raised in the House of Representatives by Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P. Mr Denham asked that Guardsmen should be issued with six pairs of socks a year. In some quarters this number was thought to be too high. When a recruit for the Army is issued with his equipment he receives three pairs of socks. As Home Guardsmen at present parade at the most twice a week, one pair of socks seems a reasonable issue. The order for the issue does not, however, cover replacements. Another recent order of interest to Home Guardsmen is that on full day parades when rations are not provided, they are entitled to a meal allowance of lOd. One problem facing the Home Guard authorities is that of the most convenient way of paying the allowance. It would obviously be impracticable to pay several hundred Guardsmen lOd each after every full day parade. The matter is still under consideration, and no doubt some satisfactory arrangement will be made.
