TIMARU MAYORALTY
Mr A. E. S. Hanan Elected (P.A.) TIMARU, October 1. An election for the mayoralty of Timaru was held today and resulted:— A. E. S. Hanan 3347 P. B. Foote (formerly acting Mayor) 1724 The election was made necessary as a result of the Borough Council declining to extend leave of absence to the former Mayor, Major W. G. Tweedy, who is Red Cross Commissioner for New Zealand in the Middle East. The new Mayor of Timaru is a member of a well-known Invercargill family. He is the third son of Mrs A. Hanan, Invercargill, and a brother of Lieutenant J. R. Hanan, who was Mayor of Invercargill when he enlisted for overseas service, and Lieutenant G. R. Hanan, New Zealand Dental Corps. His uncle, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, is a former Mayor of Invercargill. Mr Hanan was educated at the Waihopai school and the Southland Boys’ High School. On the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted with the Main Body, but did not go overseas till 1915. He has been manager of the U.F.S. Dispensary in Timaru since 1921. He was a candidate for the council for the first time at the last election and topped the poll. Mr Hanan has represented Southland at Rugby.
