Sporting WHIRLAWAY IS BEATEN AGAIN

DESERT MAID MAKES AMENDS The great American champion. Whlrlaway, was beaten for the second time in a week at Belmont Park on Saturday. This time it was Bolingbroke which upset calculations. The time was 2min 27 3-ssec for one and a-half miles, a record. Whlrlaway will probably be raced against Alsab, his conqueror last week, and Shut Out in a triangular match race in the next week or two. Desert Maid The Southland-owned Desert Maid made amends for a mulish -display at the Otago Hunt meeting a few weeks ago by winning the Raukapuka Handicap at Geraldine on Saturday. There is no doubt about the speed of the Nigger Minstrel mare and now that she has got back on to the winning list she may go on with it. She is now trained by N. Dwyer at Oamaru. Last season Desert Maid ran two seconds in 10 starts. She was one of the fastest track workers in Southland last season. Lord Advocate Lord Advocate, who won the Belfield Handicap at Geraldine on Saturday, had been doing first-class track work before the meeting. The Solicitor-General colt .has shown little form in earlier races this season. As a two-year-old, last season, he narrowly defeated Winning Flight in the Lyttelton Plate. He is in the Dunedin Guineas and on the strength of his latest success he may come into favour. Australian Racing The position with regard to the principal spring meetings in Australia, is difficult to define, but the A.J.C. Derby appears to have been fixed for October 10, with the Epsom Handicap run the same afternoon. The meeting will extend over October 17, when the Metropolitan Handicap and the Breeders’ Plate (two-year-old colts and geldings) and the Gimcrack Stakes (two-year-old fillies) will come up for decision, writes Sir Modred. The two-year-old races are of Australasian importance. In Victoria the Caulfield Cup is due on October 24, with the V.R.C. Derby dated November 14 and the Melbourne Cup on November 21. Wilson Mentioned as progressing well in his preparation in Melbourne and standing up to racing, Wilson is said to have come Into calculations for the Caulfield Cup. A six-year-old gelding, with a number of attractive performances to his account during past seasons, he is a son of the Southland sire Siegfried. Tranquil Star An absentee from the list of winners for some time, Melbourne’s brilliant mare Tranquil Star dashed into the limelight on Saturday to win the Quality Handicap at Moonee Valley. A five-year-old, she is by Victoria’s most successful sire, by Lothario, and she is one of the best of his long line of winners throughout Australia, writes Sir Modred. She stays In an encouraging fashion and the Caulfield Cup' may not be beyond her powers of endurance. She won the V.R.C. St. Leger as a three-year-old, a performance adding value to her claims as a stayer. Home James Home James won the First Division of the Pascoe Handicap, for three-year-olds at Moonee Valley on Saturday, gaining his success without difficulty. He is a son of the imported English sire John James, by Buchan. A first-class racehorse, Buchan was subsequently a very successful sire by Sunstar from Hamoaze, by Torpoint, son of Trenton, writes Sir Modred. Baronesa, grand-dam of John James, was an ancestress by Grand Knight, a noted performer and also successful at the stud in New Zealand, one of his sons being the Southland racehorse and sire Sir Simper. Southland Meeting The programme for the Southland Racing Club’s spring meeting, which has been issued, caters for two trotting events. The Southland Cup. of £2OO is the principal event on the card. Nominations for the meeting on November 21 will be taken on November 6. Rode The Double Invercargill jockeys rode the principal winning double at Geraldine on Saturday— K. E. Wilson was on Eulogist and W. F. Ellis was on All Night. Ellis has now ridden five winners this season and Wilson three. Royal Brief Royal Brief, engaged in the Novice Handicap at Wingatui next week, is a four-year-old gelding by Solicitor General from Lady Violet, a Bonlform mare and the dam of Ark Royal, winner of the Dunedin Guineas in 1927 for Mr G. J. Barton. Royal Brief is held on lease by his trainer, J. A. Rowland.

Totalizator Management It is reported that the combined Southland clubs, Which have purchased the totalizator business of W. F. James Ltd., are assured that the cost of working the totalizator under their own management will not exceed £1 per £lOO. In the past these clubs have been paying from £l/10/- to £2 per £lOO invested.

Forbury Betting System Before last week’s meeting the Forbury Park Trotting Club went into committee to consider the totalizator question. It was decided to have the ordinary win and place system of betting, and when the chairman asked for a show of hands of those favourable to the indicator machine only a minority of those present.appeared to be in favour of it. A Consistent Pacer

There are few more consistent pacers than Shadow Maid, who In her last 14 starts has had four wins, three seconds, four thirds and two fourths. She Is by the New Zealand Cup winner Red Shadow, who had two other winning representatives, in Silhouette and Brungasta, at the recent Wellington meeting.
