MAYOR MAKES APPEAL Eastern Southland requires £9OO to fill its patriotic fund quota and it has only two days in which to raise this stun. The Mayor, Mr W. D. Shelton, made a special appeal to the district yesterday to exert every effort to reach the amount required. He said the extra money was needed for the sick and wounded soldiers and the prisoners of war. “No appeal could be more worthy, and I feel confident that the district will rise to' the occasion,” Mr Shelton said. “These men have done their bit for their country and the Empire, and we cannot let them down in their hour of need." AIR FORCE BAND—A decision to accept an offer made on behalf of the band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force to visit Gore on Thursday, October 15, was made at a public meeting held in the council chambers last night. The Mayor said that the band was at present touring the Dominion and that October 15 had been reserved for a possible visit to Gore. Arrangements for the visit were discussed and the following executive and programme committee was appointed:—Messrs W. D. Shelton, W. L. McGoldrick, G. W. Whittingham. E. D. Kirby, S. D. Blomfield, R. S. Green, A. N. Stevenson, H. H. Brown, W. McGill, H. H. Doughty, A. Jackman, and M. Reid. Mesdames H. H. Doughty, D. M. Cochrane, D. McAskill. T. L. Macdonald, J. D. Paterson and W. D. Shelton were appointed a billeting and entertainment committee. It was stated that the band would probably give ceremonial displays and that a concert and dance would probably be held. Offers to billet 30 of the 65 members of the band were received at the meeting. EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS.— Whether or not members of the E.P.S. should be equipped with steel helmets was discussed at a meeting of the Gore E.P.S. committee last night. It was decided to leave tire matter to the executive. It was reported that the following fire control committee had been appointed:—Messrs A. V. Latty, L. R. McDonald, J. A. S. Aitken (Borough Council), J. Ritchie, G. Bishop, T. Preece (E.P.S.), Superintendent F. Wallis, Deputy Superintendent H. G. Wallis and Foreman L. O. Wallis (fire brigade). Billeting allowances in the event of an emergency were discussed and a decision v/ns made that the rate for Gore be 4/- a person a day, this being the maximum rate approved by the authorities. That the alteration in street lighting arrangements appeared to have caused some confusion among householders was a state* ment made by Mr G. Bishop. He wished to make it clear that the restrictions still applied to residences and business houses. 1 PERSONAL.— Mr A. L. Smith, who has been with the firm of Thomson and Beattie, Ltd., for the last 15 years, and who is leaving for camp, was met by the staff before his departure. A presentation of a military gift set was made by Mr W. Frampton on behalf of the staff.
