W.W.S.A. TRANSPORT GROUP

Good Results In Recent Examination Very little seems to be known by the general public of the work that is being done by the transport section of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary in Invercargill. This group is under the leadership of Mrs G. H. Uttley, and last week it was reported that a number had passed the mechanics’ examination. The examination is not an easy one and successful candidates must have a good grounding in the operation of the engine and other parts of automotive vehicles. An 80 per cent, pass was secured. The instructor is Mr G. C. Davenport, of the staff of Watts and Grieve. Mr Davenport commented yesterday on the hard test the girls had been given, and said the excellent results showed how hard they had worked. He had found them very keen and quick to learn. A good deal of their work was theoretical and most attention was paid to learning how to do roadside repairs. There had always been a good attendance at the lectures, which were held once a Week, with an occasional extra lesson as the examination approached. The last class had consisted of typists, school teachers and doYnestic workers. A new class of 17 has now started, and Mr Davenport finds them as enthusiastic about their work as the former members were. The three women who are now driving transport lorries for the Army were members of the transport group and formerly attended the lectures. The results that have been achieved in the two examinations reflect credit on the group and their instructor.
