OBITUARY

THE HON. G F. TOWNSHEND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 27. After a residence in Auckland of 73 years the death occurred on Saturday at Orakei of the Hon. George Ferrers Townshend, aged 88. He was born in Guernsey and was the son of the Rev. Lord George Osborne Townshend and a nephew of the fourth Marquis. With his widowed mother, Lady Victoria Townshend, and two brothers he arrived in New Zealand in 1877 by the barque Dilpass. He joined the Lands and Survey Department and he continued in that service until his retirement a few years ago. He was the heir presumptive to the 24-year-old Marquis who is serving with the Royal Artillery and who has a young daughter. The new heir to the title, which was created in 1724, is Mr Ferrers Osborne Townshend, of Northcote, the eldest son of the late Mr Townshend. Other sons to survive him are Messrs Stuart Townshend, of Devonport, Geoffrey Townshend, of Sydney, and Vere Townshend, of Auckland. He leaves four daughters. His two brothers are the Hon. Ernest Townshend, of Picton, and the Hon. Henry Townshend, of Ponsonby. He was uncle of the late General Sir Charles Townshend, defender of Kut.
