SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED

GORE.—Lance-Corporal C. Scott was met by a few residents at his home at Charlton Road and presented with an envelope of notes, the presentation being made by Mr Duncan Kerr. Messrs R. K. Dodds and F. Clearwater also spoke. WINTON. —At a private social held in Winton, Driver J. Gibb was entertained by his former workmates of the Southland Electric Power Supply. Because of the shortness of his leave it was impossible to arrange a public function, but the Mayor (Mr N. Metzger) attended the social and made a presentation on behalf of the residents of Winton. On behalf of the employees of the Winton sub-station Mr J. Arthur also made a presentation. APARIMA.—Trooper J. M. Ayton was entertained at a social and dance in the Aparlma School by the local patriotic committee. On behalf of the residents Mr W. James presented the guest of honour with an enevelope and conveyed to him good wishes and the best of luck in the future. Mr M. Sinclair, on behalf of the returned soldiers of Aparima, also made a presentation, as did Mr H. Hogg on behalf of the W.E.A. Good wishes were expressed by Mr Arthur James, representing the Veterinary Club, and by Mr W. J. Pullar for the local branch of the Farmers’ Union. A number of visiting soldiers received cigarettes. GLENHAM. —Two functions were held recently in honour of Glenham soldiers, home on leave. At the first Private N. Lynn was the guest of honour, and the presentation of a wristlet watch was made by Mr ft. McKenzie. Other speakers were Mrs J. Robertson. Messrs A. Rae, who presided, B. Hunter and W. Thompson. The second function was in honour of Gunner J. Bell. Mr A. Rae presided and the presentation of a wristlet watch was made by Mr S. Clarke, president of the Wyndham R.S.A., whose remarks were supported by Messrs E. Rabbidge, S. Ferguson and R. Irwin.
