HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS
ANNUAL MEETING The attendance at the annual meeting of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association on Saturday night was not nearly as large as is usual at this function, but the president, Mr R. W. Murray, explained during the course of the evening, there are about 700 Old Boys of the school serving with the armed forces and a large attendance was not expected. The report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of Mr Murray. The following officers were elected:— Patrons, Dr G. H. Uttley, Sir Robert Anderson, Lieutenant-Colonel W. Bell and Mr J. T. Carswell: president, Mr R. W. Murray: senior vice-president, Mr W. R. Strang; vice-presidents, Messrs E. H. J. Preston, J. A. Fraser, A. J. Dillon, B. R. Peterson and R. Taylor; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. P. Robertson; executive, Messrs J. C. Scandrett, I. B. McCurdy, T. R. Burt, V. L. Blakle and representatives of the associate clubs; honorary auditor, Mr H. R. Wilcox. When the business portion of the evening was concluded the meeting resolved itself into a social gathering. The following toasts were honoured:— "The School," proposed by Mr T. R. Burt and responded to by Mr J. L. Cameron; “Members on Active Service,” proposed by Mr H. R. Wilcox: “The Board of Governors” (Mr J. C. Scandrett—Mr E. H. Smith); “Associated Clubs” (Mr O. Davis—Messrs L. R. Lopdell, football, J. C. Scandrett, cricket and E. H. Smith, swimming); “The Performers" (Mr R. W. Murray—Mr Kennedy Black); "The Chairman” (Mr J. G. Imlay). During the evening songs were sung by Messrs P. McNamara, L. Blaikle and R. Hewton. Mr Kenndy Black was the accompanist.
