BASKETBALL SATURDAY’S MATCHES A general improvement in play over the previous week was shown when the Southland Basketball Union’s competitions were carried a stage further on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal and the games were all interesting. Most teams have been unable to practise up till now, but a building has been secured and practices will begin in the near future. FIRST GRADE MATCHES Rata beat S.G.H.S., 29-6. The older and more experienced Rata team had an easy win over the younger High School girls and it was a case of excellent combination and experience against inexperience. However, High School did not let Rata have the complete run of the play. The Rata forwards were combining perfectly and used their height to advantage. High School’s defence players were hard worked and acquitted themselves with credit. Collegiate beat Makarewa, 22-10. Playing better basketball than it did last week, Collegiate secured a fairly comfortable win over Makarewa. The Collegiate forwards played accurately and definitely overshadowed the Makarewa forwards, who were not up to their usual standard. Makarewa’s defences played soundly, however, and the centres were evenly matched. Kew Nurses beat Stuarts, 11-7. After a slow beginning this game became very interesting in the second half when the shooting was more accurate. Kew Nurses showed an improvement, their defence and attack were good but understanding in the centre third was lacking. The game was very even and interesting. OTHER GRADE RESULTS Second Grade. — Woodlands beat Technical, 16-10; Makarewa beat St. Mary’s, 16-4; Collegiate A beat S.G.H.S., 17-11; Pirates beat

Collegiate B, 12-8. Third Grade.—Collegiate drew with Stuarts. 10-10; Technical drew with McKenzies, 5-5; Roslyn Bush beat Bluff, 21-5; Kennington beat Pirates, 15-13; Rata beat St. Mary’s, 20-14. Fourth Grade.—Makarewa beat Collegiate B, 16-4; Collegiate A beat Bluff by default. TWENTY-SEVEN TEAMS IN TODAY’S TOURNAMENT Twenty-seven teams will be competing in the annual King’s Birthday basketball tournament at the Duke street courts today. The number of teams is considerably lower this year than it was last, when more than 50 teams entered. Play will begin at 10
