SAPLING STAKES TODAY

ASHBURTON FIELDS The Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today promises to be one of the feature attractions of the season. Excellent fields have been paid up for, and with the New Zealand Sapling Stakes and the Au Aged Stakes as the principal events the programme has a classic flavour about it. In the Sapling Stakes both Islands will be represented. Karnak will represent Auckland, and according to reports she has already disclosed form which may install her as favourite for the race. She won the first division of the Howick Handicap at Auckland in April in 2min 52 3-ssec for a mile and a-quarter. Southern trotting men will give their support to Captain Morant, Nola Scott and Larissa, and of that trio Captain Morant will probably carry most support. His win at Oamaru was very impressive, and a repetition of that form would find him hard to beat. The following horses may be expected to run well:—
