TRAVEL FACILITIES TO BE CURTAILED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 30. Because of the depletion of the railways operating staff on account of military service, the coal shortage and the heavy call on carriages for transporting armed forces, it has been found necessary to curtail some train travel facilities, particularly at the week-ends, the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Railways, announced last night. Beginning on Sunday, June 7, excursion tickets for Sunday excursion trains will be abolished, as also will the cheap fares in certain areas for travel to and from the principal cities at the week-end. Cheap fares for long-distance travel to and from race meetings and other special events will also be suspended. Mr Semple said this would not mean the elimination of Sunday trains. Provision would be made for travel for soldiers at cheap rates and for the public at ordinary rates.
