CENTENARY OF BISHOP SELWYN’S ARRIVAL

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, May 31. A notable event in the history of the Church of England in New Zealand—the arrival of its first bishop, George Augustus Selwyn, 100 years ago—was celebrated in Auckland on Saturday as the actual centennial day and today in churches throughout the Dominion. Although a downpour of rain on Saturday afternoon made it necessary to abandon a procession of pilgrimage from St. Mary’s Cathedral to the spot where Selwyn landed at Judge’s Bay, a thanksgiving service which was held in the cathedral instead was a notable commemoration. The church was filled by a congregation of nearly 1200, many of whom stood throughout. Four bishops took part and delivered addresses.
