SOUTH HILLEND TEACHER HONOURED
A social evening in honour of Mr R. P. Gibb, who is joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force, was held at South Hlllend on Tuesday. The chairman of the local Citizens’ Association, Mr J. W. Murphy, spoke of the popularity of Mr Gibb and the good work he had done for the district as secretary of the Citizens’ Association, also as a past secretary of the local Patriotic Committee, and of his splendid record as a school teacher. In presenting Mr Gibb with a wristlet watch, Mr Murphy wished him the best of luck in his Air Force career and a safe return to South Hillend. Master Jack Murphy presented Mr Gibb with a scarf from the children of the school. Mrs W. J. Langford, president of the local W.D.F.U., presented Mr Gibb with a hold-all and woollen goods. After the Citizens’ Association function, Mr P. Plunkett made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Gibb of a well-filled envelope containing money from the general public of the district. Mr Plunkett spoke of the popularity of Mr and Mrs Gibb, among the children of the school and the people of the district and trusted that they would both return to South Hillend when the war terminated. Mrs Gibb also received a present from the W.D.F.U., which was presented by Mrs W. J. Langford. Mr Gibb replied.
