INSPECTION OF RAMS

“MATTER FOR BREED SOCIETIES”

The question of the inspection of rams intended for sale was discussed at length at the annual meeting of the Southern District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand af Gore yesterday. It was contended by some members that if inspections were carried out at ram fairs they should also be carried out at stock sales. Other members expressed the opinion that the inspections should take place on the farms, while others considered that the whole question was a matter for the breed societies.

The following motion was carried: “That it be a recommendation from this meeting that the breed societies be asked to discuss the practicability of the inspection on the farms of all flock and stud rams intended for sale and destroying or castrating all rams rejected. Also that the inspection on the farms be carried out if practicable.” A report on the Inspection held by the Gore Agricultural and' Pastoral Association was given by Mr J. L. Elder, who stated that 29 sheep had been rejected at the Gore fair. His association was satisfied with the inspection. He considered, however, that his association had started at the wrong end. It was unfair to have an inspection of the flock sheep and not of the studs as well. He felt that they should all be included.

Several members expressed the opinion that the question was one for the breed societies to consider and also that the inspection should be carried out on the farms.
