THREE WINS AND TWO SECONDS

Southland Horses’ Good Form

(Special) DUNEDIN, March 1. Southland horses went very close to having a field day at the Dunedin Cup meeting yesterday. As it was they scored three wins (including the Dunedin Cup) and two seconds, and but for a shocking start in the main sprint of the day (the Publicans’ Handicap) they would almost certainly have registered four successes. In addition to these placed performances, horses from Southland stables recorded no fewer than eight fourths. All round it was a good day for the southerners, particularly as Southern Sail’s success in the Dunedin Cup completed the hat-trick for Southland horses in this event. DUNEDIN CUP.— Dr J. E. Rogers’s brilliant young mare Southern Sail lived right up to the promise she showed when winning the Wyndham Cup and the Southland Handicap at New Year by a decisive win against the best gallopers in the South Island. She had a wonderful run on the rails for the greater part of the journey, and although giving several horses a start at the top of the straight, she unwound a run which took her to the front well inside the distance and enabled her to beat Arctic Dawn by a good margin. Southern Sail’s victory was all the moremeritorious when it was learned that she suffered accidental interference about half a mile from home. She was forced on to the rails and came in with a cut stifle.

PUBLICANS’ HANDICAP.— Secret Flight was a certainty beaten in this race. The field was sent away to a walk-in start and both Secret Flight and Lord Nuffield, two strongly fancied candidates, were left standing when the barrier was released. Secret Flight set out after the field and with three furlongs to go was giving tire leaders, Circular Note, Don’t Forget and Gold Flight, about 10 lengths start. She was seventh into the straight, but she put in a great burst up the straight and got to within a length of Circular Note, who had the run of the race from a flying start and won fairly comfortably. The start spoiled what might have been a good race between some high-class sprinters. CHAMPAGNE STAKES.— Once again the Clifford colours were carried to victory in this event, Straight Bat winning well from Wedding Ring, with Foxhaven beating Carolyn for third money. Carolyn showed up for half a mile, but her condition failed her in the run home and it was obvious the check in her training cost her a good chance of success. The winner finished strongly, but had to be shaken up to beat Wedding Ring.

WARRINGTON HURDLES.— This race was an all-Southland affair, Gold Robe and Noko being first and second and the Southland horsemen (Low, Boyle and Strathern) riding all three placed horses. Noko and Gold Robe had a great race home from the last hurdle, Gold Robe getting the verd’et by a neck. Both the winner and runner-up put up good performances. It was Gold Robe’s first success over hurdles in three starts.

BERWICK HANDICAP.— RoyaI Chorus reproduced some of his early season form in winning the Berwick Handicap. He was kept in behind the leaders and a furlong from home he had the race won, although he had to be ridden out to keep out Help Mate, who finished strongly on the fence.

STEWARDS’ HANDICAP.— Lord Nuffield made a bold attempt to win the Stewards’ Handicap from end to end, but had to give way to a strong finishing run by Wild Fox. Waitoru was well placed, but failed to stay on and finished seventh. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.— The former Southlander Sally Lunn made no race of the President’s Handicap once heads were straightened for home. She raced in behind the leaders, Astaire, Georgia, Taxpayer, Hotch Potch and Bright Form, and in the straight cut down the field in effortless style. Bright Form made a bold bid when he hit the front at the top of the straight and hung on well for second place. TRIAL HANDICAP.— Lady Nuffield took charge after Latest Song stopped and went on for a comfortable win. Light Cavalry stayed on better than usual and Forte, a novice, finished with a good burst. Judy O’Grady drew an outside position at the barrier, otherwise she might have been closer than fourth.
