TWO CANDIDATES NAMED

DR LANG’S SUCCESSOR

LONDON, January 22.

A successor to Dr Cosmo Lang as Archbishop of Canterbury will shortly be nominated by Mr Winston Churchill for Royal approval. The choice is believed to lie between the Bishop of London (the Rt. Rev. G. F. Fisher) and the Archbishop of York (Dr William Temple).

The Rt. Rev. G. F. Fisher was appointed Bishop of London in 1939. At the time he was Bishop of Chester, an office which he had held since 1932. Prior to that he was headmaster of Refton School. He is 55 years of age. Dr Temple, who is 61, has been Archbishop of York since 1929. He is a son of a former Archbishop of Canterbury. When raised to the See of York he had been Bishop of Manchester for eight years. Dr Temple takes a keen interest in social questions and was president of the Workers’ Educational Association from 1908 to 1924.
