HEAVIER INDIRECT TAXATION

AUSTRALIA’S EXTRA WAR EXPENDITURE (Rec. 5.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 22. Heavier indirect taxation, new loans and economy in spending by State Governments will probably contribute towards the extra expenditure necessitated by the entry of Japan into the war. An approximate estimate is that war expenditure will exceed £250,000,000 at the end of the financial year, instead of the £221,000,000 provided for in the last Budget. The Federal Cabinet is also expected to impose new, indirect taxation to raise another £2,000,000 which is needed to increase the old age and invalid pensions from 23/6 to 25/- a week.
