NATIONAL YEARLING SALES

BULANDSHAR COLT BRINGS TOP PRICE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 23. The sixteenth annual national sale of thoroughbred yearlings concluded at Trentham today, when 55 lots were sold for 10,217 i guineas. For the two days 153 lots were offered and 137 sold for a total of 25,592 guineas, or an average of 186 guineas. As was generally expected a halfbrother by Bulandshar to Defaulter topped the market, his price, 1050gns, being 150gns above that secured by a Foxbridge-Astarth colt on the first day. The colt was knocked down to Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., acting for Mr W. S. Goosman, who also purchased the Astarth colt. The next highest figure was 550gns for a halfbrother by Bulandshar to the Welcome Stakes winner, Grilse. The purchaser was Dr Nigel Smith, of Sydney. The colt is destined to be sent to Australia when the opportunity offers. The under bidder for Defaulter’s relation was the Grange studmaster, Mr M. Grogan, acting undei’ cabled instructions from J. T. Jamieson. It is understood that Jamieson cabled similar instructions about the Astarth colt, but the cable arrived too late.

A black colt by Defoe from the English mare Falcon, a half-sister to Ellangowan, attracted marked attention and was expected to reach a high figure, but the bidding for him opened at 200 and he appeared very reasonable at 525. A heavy fall of rain interrupted the sale of older stock for over half an hour and the attendance when the proceedings resumed was very sparse. The stallion Philamor was sold for 55gns to Mr S. J. Neilson, Palmerston North. Gladynev and Tidewaiter were both passed in. Blue Garter, with a foal at

foot by Siegfried and in foal to Robin Goodfellow, was sold for 185gns. Sales at 200 guineas and over were:— Account H. Hassall (Hastings), colt by Lang Bian-Love of Silver to A. M.
