SHIELD RINK BOWLS COMPETITION The rink championship of the Southland Bowling Club was decided during the week, and the final between rinks skipped by D. K. Torrance and Inspector Martin resulted in a win by 21 to 9 for Torrance’s rink. In the first game between these rinks Martin’s rink won by 27 to 10. The teams were: W. J. McKitterick, E. S. Inglis, L. H.. Wildermoth and D. K. Torrance; and J. Darroch,' J. Hamilton, W. Snow and Martin. The winning rink will represent the Southland Club in the shield rink competition next Saturday. Tennis The Southland Lawn Tennis Association has been obliged to accept the withdrawal from the inter-club competition of the Winton A grade team. This team has performed with distinction over a long period, and at all times has reflected great credit oh its coach, Mr G. Lindsay. However, being situated at such a distance from town, the club has at times found travelling arrangements a difficulty, and with the withdrawal of the petrol allocation, because of the prevailing conditions, its difficulties have become insuperable. Jt is hoped that the club’s return to the senior competition will be a matter of but a short time. In the meantime, following its usual practice, the association will record wins by default in favour of clubs drawn against Winton for the remainder of the current competition.

Swedish Coach The noted Swedish sports coach, Dr Frederick E. Gallas, gave a lecture. to a large audience of club representatives at the Caledonian Ground, Dunedin, on Thursday. Dr Gallas recently concluded a successful coaching season in Wellington, and went to Dunedin under the auspices of the Otago Athletic Centre, in co-operation with the Physical Welfare Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. Dr Gallas will again give lectures each night next week, before returning north oh Saturday, January 31. He will also screen five special coaching films made in America.

Evening Sports Although the men’s running events have not drawn good entries at the evening sports this season, the women’s events have been well supported and some promising women runners have participated. Probably S. Pulley has been the most successful competitor. On Tuesday night she repeated her consistent form by gaining a first and a third placing. She finished well in each race and showed plenty of determination. Miss M. Waddick and Miss A. Townsend have also run well this season and both are likely to show improvement before the season is ended. Interprovincial Swimming Southland swimmers would be well advised to keep themselves fit for the interprovincial meeting between Otago and Southland at Dunedin in March. When this meeting is held Southland will need r. big number of swimmers to complete the team, as it is a big programme and allows for three competitors from each province in each race or dive.

The Mararoa Reports indicate, that the Mararoa is carrying a large stock of fish in excellent condition. Good bags have been got all up and down the stream on the dry fly. .Visitors to. Lake Mavora have also been getting good bags on the wet fly after dark. The Mararoa fish are as usual in excellent condition, being short, thick fish and give excellent sport on light tackle. ’ \ ,
