Brigadier P. Atherfold, of Dunedin, divisional commander for Otago and Southland of the Salvation Army, is visiting Invercargill. Yesterday he conducted young people’s anniversary services. He will return north tomorrow morning.

Mr M. Cable, M.I.E.E, A.M.1.M.E., will retire from the position of general manager of the tramway and electricity departments of the Wellington City Corporation at the end of January. During the Eastern Southland National Fitness Rally at the Gore show grounds on Saturday afternoon a presentation was made in front of the grandstand by the Mayor of Gore (Mr W. D. Shelton) to Seaman-Operator S. Shaw, who is visiting Gore on leave. Mr Shelton presented Seaman-Opera-tor Shaw with a cheque on behalf of the citizens of the town and wished him the best of luck. Mr J. J. Taylor has been appointed deputy to the registrar of births, deaths and marriages for Balfour, states a Gazette notice.
