PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTESTS
SOUTHLAND BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL The annual public speaking contests of the Southland Boys’ High School for the T D. Pearce Memorial Prizes were completed on Thursday. The judges were masters of the school. C G Anderson gave a well-reasoned speech on “Post-War Reconstruction and was placed first in the senior section A. U. McCurdy, who was more oratorical in style and showed good voice control, was placed second with his subject, “Man, The Beast, and B. J. Dalton gained third place with a thoughtful discussion on ‘ Socialism. There were 11 competitors. In the junior contest G. E. Ramages easy and humorous style gave him a clear-cut win. His subject was The Smoky Jungle Frog.” H. A. Roxburgh, who described in interesting style the “Story of the Motor-car,” was second, and R. Wilson, making light of the technicalities of “Signalling,” was third. There were 12 competitors. SINGING COMPETITIONS The annual singing competitions, which were inaugurated some years ago by the Old Boys’ Association, were also held during the week. The results were:— Senior Section.—J. L. Thompson, “The Linden Tree” (95pts) 1, M. A. McDougall. “Young Tom o’ Devon” (90pts) 2, I. G. Gilbertson, “For England” (87pts) 3. Junior Section.—l. A. Wilson, The Holy City” (80pts) 1, A. Aitken, “The Holy City” (79pts) 2, J. A. McKenzie, “I’ll Walk Beside You” (78pts) 3. The rector (Dr G. H. Uttley.) thanked Mr J. M. McCrostie for judging the contests. He also said he was pleased to see the boys showing so much interest in their s nging. Mr Kennedy Black, the school singing teacher, was the accompanist.
