PUREBRED BULLS SOLD

COMBINED BREEDS OFFERING The ninth combined sale of registered purebred cattle, conducted by the Southland Agricultural' and Pastoral Association was held at the Invercargill show grounds yesterday in bitterly cold and unpleasant weather. The annual sale of the Southland Jersey Breeders’ Cattle Club was held on the same ground. Altogether a catalogue of 244 head was placed before only a fair attendance of buyers, including some from North Otago. In general the prices realized for the bulls was from five to 10 guineas lower than at last year’s sale. It was stated that the larger entries and the particularly bad weather were contributing factors to the drop in prices. Buyers generally were cautious and discriminating in their selection, although passings were not particularly numerous. With one or two exceptions the sale dragged from the outset. Included in the entry was a number of low-condi-tioned bulls, which were hard to sell. AYRSHIRES IN POOR DEMAND The demand for Ayrshires was poor. Well grown yearlings and two-year-olds brought to 16 and 161 guineas, others 121 to 141 guineas and smaller sorts eight to 12 guineas. The one Red Poll which was entered in the catalogue was not sold. The top price of 35 guineas in the sale of Friesians was secured by A. and R. Udy (Menzies Ferry) for Lelburne Isola Dutchman, an animal with good butterfat backing. It was bought by Mr W. S. Brown, of Riverton. Other successful breeders were A. Forsyth (Owaka), James Winter (Menzies Ferry) and J. C. McKay (Wyndham). The prices secured by various breeders were as follows: — AYRSHIRES 1 T. S. Muirhead (Waimatuku) 16)gns, 16, 12; P.
