CONFLICTING REPORTS

MEN POSTED AS MISSING

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 28. The Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. T. Bennett, received private advice some days ago that his son, Lieutenant F. T. Bennett, was safe and well and a day or two later came Government advice that he was missing. Similar advices have been received about Captain E. T. W. Love (Wellington), Captain H. F. Smith (Hastings), Gunner G. Downes (Palmerston North), the wellknown boxer, and others. “It is very difficult to know which information to accept,” said Bishop Bennett, “but I am inclined to accept the private message, for if, as stated by the Minister of Defence, the Government has a list of 2000 to deal with, it is quite possible and likely that there has been considerable delay in getting the list ready and in the meantime men posted as missing may have safely reached their destination, from which they could cable.”
