WAIKATO WINTER SHOW

GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S SPEECH (P.A.) HAMILTON, May 27. The Waikato winter show was officially opened today by the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall. On their arrival at the show buildings their Excellencies were met by a guard of honour formed by the Hamilton Company of the National Military Reserve and then passed through lines formed by the Women’s Auxiliary Volunteer Corps. “In these grave days we are all being confronted at all times with new problems in our ordinary business and social life. Problems which would often seem insoluble if we faced them from the point of view of citizens of a nation at peace,” said his Excellency. “We have to look at them very differently because we are no longer a nation at peace, but an Empire fighting for its life against a very powerful and unscrupulous foe. Peace-time standards of private interest must now be swept aside; we must govern everything that we do and judge everything that happens to us by its effect upon the conduct of the war and its value to the Empire as a whole. Unless we each do our bit and do it cheerfully we are failing in our duty to our families, our friends and our beloved Empire.” In the butter section the grand championship was won by Golden Bay with 755 points, Cambridge being second with 753 points and the Bay of Islands third with 752 points. The open championship, box of export butter, resulted: Rodney (P. S. Halligan) 1, United (E. D. Hutchinson) 2, New Zealand Co-operative Company, Waitoa (K. Campbell) 3. In the cheese section the grand championship resulted: Parkvale (D. N. Adams )1, Pahiatua (L. J. Haeynes) 2. The open championship of New Zealand resulted: Dalefield (W. Linton) 1, Parkvale (D. N. Adams) 2, Pahiatua (L. J. Haeynes )3.
