PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL
SWIMMING CONTESTS A full programme has been arranged for the patriotic swimming carnival at the Baths tomorrow night and a good night’s entertainment is assured. As well as handicap races and' diving, several special events have been arranged. Great interest among swimmers has been aroused by the two special matched relays. In the first, a team of backstroke swimmers, captained by Miss Joyce Macdonald, will compete against a team of breaststrokers, captained by Bruce Morgan. As no fewer than four New Zealand champions will compete in this event and, on paper, there is less than a fifth of a second between the two teams, an exciting race is assured. In the second relay matched teams swimming all styles will compete. Again they are arranged so that they should finish in line.
A new feature is a special life-saving competition arranged by Mr A. J. Kingsland, in which all the competitors are girls. This season great progress has been made with girls’ life-saving classes and their competition work in the water will be keen and interesting. Humour will be provided by a special arrangement of the crossing the, line ceremony by the Jellicoe Sea Scouts, who always bring considerable histrionic talent and 'plenty of vigour into their productions. Another original turn will be provided by Bruno and Bruno, jun., the new mystery pair.
