TOKANUI
ANZAC SERVICE A very large number of residents attended the service held in the Tokanui Hall on Anzac Day. This was the first service held here for many years. There were representatives from Slope Point and Quarry Hills. The service was conducted by Mr Weston, local home missionary for the Presbyterian Church, Miss Earwaker presiding at the piano. The Home Guard, under Mr A. Coster, paraded. Mr Weston spoke of the spirit of Anzac, which, he said, lived on in the hearts of men. through the self-sacrifice of the dead. Mr W. Weir (Slope Point) gave the dedication, after which the congregation preserved two minutes silence. Mr Weston led in prayer, then the congregation sang the hymns “O God Our Help In Ages Past,” “O God of Love, O King of Peace” and “Through the Night of Doubt and sorrow.” Many flowers were placed on the shrine of memory of the dead. At the conclusion of the service, the “Last Post” and the “Reveille” were sounded.
