SOCIAL EVENING FOR SOLDIERS The Waianiwa Hall was crowded when friends gathered to honour Privates J. Parr, A. Brown and J. Bradshaw, of the 3rd Echelon, and Mr J. F. Grieve, who has joined the Air Force. The evening took the form of a social and dance, music being supplied by the New River Dance Band, with extras played by Private J. Bradshaw. Those who contributed items were: — Solo, Mr V. Wilson; sketch, “The Dumb Wife,” local residents; solo, Miss M. Dalrymple; solo, Mr Leichman; selected items. Private J. Bradshaw; sketch, “The Thirsty Traveller,” local residents. Mr J. B. Steans acted as master of ceremonies. Mr D. McPherson spoke of the popularity of the young men and said they were always willing to give their services to help with any function held for the good of the district. He congratulated them on the step they had taken and on behalf of those present asked each to accept a safety razor. Miss Ashley Grieve, on behalf of the school-children, presented each of the guests with a pair of mittens.
