GROWING LINEN FLAX IN SOUTHLAND
2000 ACRES NOW PROMISED As a result of recent meetings of of farmers in the Otautau and Winton districts about 2000 acres have been promised for growing linen flax in the spring. This is only 500 acres short of the 2500 needed before it will be possible to establish processing plants at those centres, and after more meetings to be held this week it is hoped that at least the total area required will have been promised. Offers to grow 194 acres were made at a meeting at Centre Bush and 130 were promised at Orawia. This evening Mr J. W. Woodcock, of Dunedin, fields superintendent for Otago and Southland, and Mr W. R. Harris will attend a meeting at Hedgehope, Mr A. Stuart, instructor in agriculture at Invercargill, will visit Nightcaps, and Mr W. L. Harbord, of the Department of Agriculture, will address a meeting at South Hillend. Meetings will be held at Isla Bank and Winton tomorrow night; at Browns and Lochiel on Saturday night, and at Thombury on Monday night.
