GALA DAY IN CITY NEXT MONTH

THOUSANDS OF PARCELS RECEIVED

Goods for 21,850 parcels have now been received or promised for the gala day in aid of the patriotic fund to be held in Invercargill on July 12, according to a progress report received at a meeting of the Invercargill Traders’ Mystery Parcel and Gala Day Committee last night. Mr J. D. Campbell presided over an attendance of 30. It was stated that among the parcels would be one containing an order for goods to the value of £2O, while many others would contain substantial prizes given by city firms. A large number of girls, lent by city firms, have been busy this week wrapping parcels at the depot in The Southland Times building; in two and a-half days they wrapped up 4500 articles. The depot is open every day and more donations of goods will be welcomed. Arrangements were made at the meeting last night for street entertainments. It is proposed to organize a big procession of decorated floats and firms and individuals are invited to forward entries. Concert parties, orchestras and other entertainers, all in fancy costumes, will give items during the day, and in the evening it is hoped to have dancing in a street roped off for the purpose. The Southland Education Board has approved of the city school children being given a half-holiday on the day of the gala.
