TUATAPERE

PLUNKET SOCIETY GOOD ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the Tuatapere Plunket Society, Mrs C. Duncan presided over a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the president extended her thanks to the committee and other members for their loyalty to her during her term of office. The annual report stated that another successful year had ended. At present there was a credit balance of £62 in the Post Office Savings Bank and £29 in the Invercargill Savings Bank. During the year, a bazaar, a street day and a shilling afternoon produced a profit of £5l. Mr J. Davies held a picture benefit for the society and this realized £4/6/-. Thanks were also due to Miss Cora Catto, whose dancing pupils also assisted. Donations were received from Mr and Mrs B. Brookes, the Shop Assistants’ Ball Committee and Mr John King. Although there were 42 members, their fees alone would not allow the society to function properly and thus it was necessary to raise funds by entertainments. During the year, a donation of £2/2/- was made to the Truby King Memorial fund. The committee wished to thank all those who had helped the society.

Gazzard (Otautau) presided over an attendance of 34 members. Mr Gazzard tendered his resignation as president of the sub-branch and also as Western representative on the management committee of the Southland branch, because of his transfer to Dunedin. This was accepted with regret, Mr Hoskins (Nightcaps) stating that this was a fitting opportunity to thank Mr Gazzard for the work he had done in establishing the sub-branch on a sound basis. Mr Gazzard returned thanks for what had been said and for the assistance he had received from all members. Mr J. W. Martin (Riverton) was appointed representative on the management committee. As next meeting will be the annual meeting, no appointment to the position o president was made. It was decided to hold the next meeting in Otautau on the third Thursday in June. The matter of holding school sports in the district was held over until a later date. At the conclusion of general business, Mr Gazzard introduced Miss McAlister, of the Education Department, who is at present in Southland acting as adviser in infant teaching and general methods. Miss McAlister then gave a very instructive and entertaining talk on handwork. Mr J. H. Scott (Eastern Bush) also gave a talk on the correlation of handwork with history, especially as it affects the sole charge school.
