SOUTHLAND HIGH SCHOOLS

ROLL NUMBER WELL MAINTAINED Evidence that the roll numbers at the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools were being maintained was shown in the reports of the lady principal and the rector submitted to the meeting of the Southland High Schools’ Board yesterday. The roll number at the girls’ school on March 1 was 298; last year at the same period the roll number was 300; stated the report of Miss A. Eastwood. “The girls are quietly but regularly making contributions to patriotic funds. Each form is organizing a small sale. The total amount collected to date is £l6/8/6. In addition about 50 balaclavas and some pairs of socks and mittens have been knitted. Articles have been provided for soldiers’ parcels.” Of the 28 girls who entered for the Royal Drawing Society’s examination in December 23 gained honours and four gained pass certificates. BOYS’ SCHOOL “There are 300 boys on the roll; eight have left since March 1 and two boys have been admitted,” stated the report of the rector (Dr G. H. Uttley). “Five of the boys who have left have obtained positions in which the qualification is a pass in the University entrance examination.”
