MATAURA ISLAND
PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE An enthusiastic meeting, representative of almost every household in the district, was held in the Mataura Island hall, the object being to form a local patriotic committee. It was unanimously decided that all present form themselves into the Mataura Island Patriotic Committee, and that every householder subscribe a minimum of 5/- a month for the duration of the war. The following executive was elected:—Messrs J. A. Graham (chairman), J. Davidson (secretary), J. A. Rule, G. Carnie, D. A. Howden, W. Davidson, A. W. Christie, jun., A. Simpson, E. Perkins, S. Hands, G. Sloan and J. Boyce. At the end of the meeting the women met and decided to form a branch of the Red Cross Society. Miss N. Christie was appointed president and Mrs J. Dunlop secretary, and arrangements were made to begin the work as soon as the necessary information was available from the parent society in Gore.
