SPANISH LAD’S WORK

Riverton Horses Are Ready SOUTHERN SAIL HAS PROSPECTS The work of candidates engaged at the Dunedin summer meeting and other holiday fixtures was the centre of interest at Riverton yesterday morning, when the course proper, about 30ft out, was in fast order. One of the best gallops of the morning was put up by Spanish Lad, while others to show up were Gold Flight, Southern Sail, Kippen, Bay Duke and Nigger Boy. Dark Flight (Rainbow) ran five furlongs in Imin ssec, the last half in 52 2-ssec. It was an easy task for the three-year-old and he was doing his work well within himself all the way. He was let up for a month after racing at Riccarton and is gradually approaching his best again. He was withdrawn from his first day’s engagement at Wingatui, but it is possible that he will be sent up for the second and third days if the weights suit. Gold Flight (Rainbow) covered five furlongs on her own in Imin 4sec, the first two in 26sec and the last half in 52sec. This effort was no trouble to her and she promises to be hard to beat in her engagements next week. She has furnished into a fine type of filly and may yet perform up to the high opinions held of her. In Flight was let off with easy work on the plough. The Full Feather three-year-old has come through a sound preparation and he is a novice ... who should give a good account of himself during the holidays. He is a halfbrother to Half and Half and is a bold galloper.

PEONY ROSE WELL Peony Rose (F. Boyle) jumped away from the mile and a-quarter post but until she reached the six-furlong post she was only going half pace. She ran the last six in Imin 20sec, the last five in Imin ssec and the last half in 52sec, The Robespierre mare looks a picture and as she has come through a sound preparation she should give a good account of herself next week. Viking (Rainbow) covered five furlongs in Imin 6sec, the first two in 27sec and the last half in 52sec, and he did it comfortably. He has done well since being returned to work and will not ’be , long showing his best. Southern Sail (F. Boyle)' jumped away at the seven-furlong post and after running the first two in 26sec, the three in 39sec, she completed the journey in Imin 34sec, the last half in 55sec. She was stopping at the finish, but it was a particularly good gallop 'for a novice on the extreme outer. Kippen (P. Boyle) ran seven furlongs on his own in Imin 34sec, the first two in 28sec and the last half in 54sec. This was a useful effort as he appeared to be loafing on it. His work has been of a really good standard in recent weeks. A three-year-old filly by Paper Money from Star of Wakatipu and _ a Full Feather mare sprinted half a mile in 52 4-ssec. Rodeur (Jenkins) and Bay Duke (Leach) were together at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4 2-ssec, the last half in 51 2-ssec. Bay Duke, who is quite sound again, was doing it the better, but Rodeur is not a good track worker. She bears a much improved appearance since produced at the Southland meeting last month. BOAFORM PLEASES Philibeg (P. Boyle) and Boaform (Robertson) jumped away from a barrier start and ran half a mile in 52sec, the first three in 40sec. Boaform went on to complete the mile and was staying on in good style. Philibeg, who is a two-year-old half-brother by Philamor to Peony Rose, was allowed to drop out at the three. He is a big youngster and will be produced at the Dunedin meeting. Boaform is a picture of condition and has done well since winning at the Southland meeting. She promises to race prominently in her engagements at Wingatui. Dazzling Raid was given a couple of rounds on the plough. 'He has improved greatly since raced last month and has been working soundly. He was jumped during the week and shaped well.

La Boca and Panara were let off with easy work. La Boca was schooled over some brush fences on Monday, while Panara, along with Henry Dawson, was schooled over hurdles. Henry Dawson took his fences in great style. A three-year-old gelding by Irish Lancer from Cantara and a five-year-old gelding by British Empire from Eleanor Boling sprinted half a mile in 52sec, the last three in 40sec, a useful task for the two novices. The Irish Lancer gelding, who is an upstanding juvenile, was doing it the better. Lochie River was worked on the plough. The Weathervane gelding is in excellent order and his work has been of a good standard. He may not be long in repeating his best form. Spanish Lad (Jenkins) beat Nigger Boy (Leach) over five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the first two in 24 2-ssec, the last half in 51sec and the last three in 38 3-ssec. Spanish Lad was under a strong hold and could have done much better. He is a picture of condition and will be in favour for his Dunedin engagements. He will probably contest the sprint the first day and the big race the second day. Nigger Boy, who is not a good track worker, has trained on since last raced. He will most likely be produced in the open sprint the second day at Wingatui.
