The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) announced today that the Governor-General (Viscount Galway) has appointed Mr Archibald Campbell, of Port Chalmers, to the Legislative Council. He represented Chalmers from 1935 to 'l93B.—Press Association.

Mr W. F. Sturman, town clerk, will leave Invercargill for Wellington by car this morning. He will be absent on annual holiday leave for three weeks.

Dr A. G. Gilchrist, who was formerly attached to the eye, ear, nose and throat department of the Dunedin Hospital, has been appointed house surgeon on the staff of the Southland Hospital Board. He will take up his duties in the New Year.

Mr Campbell Lewis, of Levin, who visited Invercargill for the Centennial Royal Show, returned north yesterday. Mr Walter Gray, touring manager for Celebrity Attractions Ltd., arrived in Invercargill yesterday to arrange for the presentation early next month of “Charley’s Aunt” and “Up in Mabel’s Room.”

A motion of sympathy with the relations of Lance Corporal J. T, Nelson, who was killed in the railway accident at Edendale on December 14, was carried at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Southland Swimming Centre. Lance Corporal Nelson was a member of the Collegiate Swimming Club. Reference to the deaths of three former members of the Southland Hospital Board, Miss H. L. Hunt, Mr H. E. Niven and Mi- A. McKenzie, who died recently, was made at yesterday’s meeting of the board by the chairman, Mr T. Golden. Both Mr McKenzie and Miss Hunt had been members of the board at the time of their deaths, said Mr Golden. Mr McKenzie had been an outstanding figure in Southland for many years. Miss Hunt had given 19 years of service to the old Wallace Hospital Board and the present combined board, and at the last board election had topped the poll, which was a tribute to her public-spiritedness. The loss of these two members would be a serious one. Mr Niven was at one time a member of the board and was very sympathetic with the work on behalf of the sick and needy.
