PATRIOTIC GIFT OF £500

Donation To Otago Council GENEROUS ACTION BY MR SALTZMAN (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 19. At a meeting of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council this morning the following letter from Mr S. Saltzman, which was received with applause, was read by the Mayor:— As a citizen of the British Empire which is engaged in the gigantic task of maintaining liberty and freedom and as destiny has brought me into existence many years tod soon, so depriving me of participating physically in doing something for this great cause which the British Empire is fighting for, I therefore deem it my duty to help, at least in a monetary way, those young and valiant men who are willing to sacrifice their lives for their country’s cause. We feel particularly proud of our New Zealand boys who assisted in the defeat of the monster who destroyed so many innocent lives while it was at large and I therefore enclose a cheque for £5OO for the patriotic fund which may be disposed of in whatever direction you may deem necessary. I may also say that should any occasion arise when my help is required I shall deem it my duty to assist in whatever way possible. The following is a list of public gifts made by Mr Saltzman in the past few years:— Grey Hospital, £lOOO. Oamaru Children’s Hospital, £2OOO, Dunedin Opthalmic Hospital, £1275. Children’s health camp at Company Bay, £1250. Waipiata Sanatorium block, £3OOO. St. John Ambulance building at Dunedin, £7OOO. Balclutha tuberculosis block, £3OOO. Otago Provincial Patriotic Council, £5OO. Total, £19,025.
