HIGH SCHOOL DISPLAY INTER-HOUSE PHYSICAL AND MILITARY DRILL

The physical and military drill interhouse competitions of the Gore High School were held, on the school grounds, when eveiy pupil of the school took part. The standard of the, work greatly impressed the judges, refleting credit on the work of the instructors and the nature of the schedule arranged by the rector. Ivlr E. H. W. Rowntree, and his staff. . . r,-1 The judging was carried out by Colonel E. F. Selby (military platoon drill and rifle exercises), Lieutenant H.Horrell (musketry examination), Mr A. G. Melville (boys’ physical drill) and Mrs A. S. Atkins (girls’ physical drill). Special mention was made by Colonel Selby at the conclusion of the parades of the sound work of the non-commis-sioned officers, while the other judges were well satisfied with the standard of work being done. A total of 50 points was allowed for platoon drill and this was won by the McNab house cadets with 41 points, Anderson house being second with 39 points. Hunter house secured the most points in the rifle exercises, gaining 27 out of a possible 40, Anderson and Cargill houses being next with 25 points each. Cargill house was superior in its musketry knowledge, securing 20j points out of a total of 30. The pupils were very good in the physical drill exercises, especially the girls. The boys’ section was won by Cargill house with 47 points out of a total of 60, McNab being second with 45 points. The girls’ drill was won by Cargill, who secured 53 points, there being only two points separating the other houses.

INCREASE IN BIRTHS There was an increase in the number of births at Gore during November, compared with the figures for last November. Deaths showed . a decrease and there was the same number of marriages. The returns for the month with last year’s figures for the same month also shown are as follows: —

SUMMER GOLF Twenty-three players took part in a stroke match arranged by the Gore Golf Club, when the links were in good order. The match was won by L. C. Barron with a gross score of 50J, J. F. Churstain being second. Play was over 12 holes and Barron was 15 strokes over bogey. The best net score was that of F. Olson. He took 55 for the 12 holes and was four strokes over bogey. The best cards were as follows:—•

BUILDING RETURNS Six building permits valued at £3300 were issued at Gore during the month of November, compared with three permits valued at £2249 issued at Gore for November last year. The total for the borough financial year is now £23,199, compared with £23,364/10/- for the same period last year.
