EDENDALE

MONTHLY MEETING OF TOWN BOARD The monthly meeting of the Edendale Town Board was attended by the, following members: Crs W. Irvine (chairman), M. D. Turner, T. Hickey, P. Botting and W. Chaplin. Inspector Blair reported that the crossing at Melville street had been completed and the water was now being carried away freely. Twenty-one loads of gravel had been spread on the streets in the town.

It was decided to advise the railways engineer, Invercargill, that the board had no objection to the department putting in its own crossings, so long as they were put in to the satisfaction of the board.

The District Health Officer’s monthly report stated that it was pleasing to note the continued absence of any infectious disease in the town. The chairman said it had not been the custom of the board to charge a fee for eating-houses in the town, although it had authority to do so u der its bylaws. He understood that the fee would have to be charged in the future, however, so as to give the Health Officer power to inspect such houses: The Employment Division of the Department of Labour forwarded particulars of the allocation of Scheme No. 13 workers to farm development work under Scheme No. 48. The letter stated that the stage had now been reached when all available suitable labour should be employed on productive work on the land,’ and local bodies were asked to co-operate to their utmost in releasing men for this purpose. Accounts totalling £4l/18/8 were passed for payment. Cr Hickey said he understood the main highway within the town from Mr Tither’s residence to Wright, Stephenson and Co’s corner was to have been tar-sealed for the whole width of the road. The work was now in progress and preparation was only being made to seal the road 24ft wide, which meant that in time grass and weeds would grow up on each side of the bitumen. He considered the board should make an effort to get the sealing done for the full width of the road before it was too late, and towards this end, the support of the County Council could be solicited. The cler 1 - said application to have the area done full width had been made to the department, but no reply had come to hand. When the road had been prepared for the full width it had been assume! that the board’s request had been granted. It was decided to get in touch with the engineer on the matter.

The clerk reported that the revenue

from the town hall for the month had been £4/11/-, and the expenditure was £3/18/11. t . The chairman said the first aid class in the hall was now functioning and a first-aid kit was to be purchased for the town and left in his house for use in cases of emergency. The question of having the pavilion painted was brought up by the chairman, and members are to make an inspection of the reserve Lefore anything definite is done in the matter. The practice of school children leaving the cemetery gate open was referred to and it was decided to secure a padlock to put on the gate to prevent this. The increasing duties of the clerk having been brought under the notice of the board by the auditor, it was unanimously decided to increase the clerk’s salary by £lO per annum, members paying tribute to the excellent work Mr Norton was doing on behalf of the board.
