ANNUAL MEETING OF TENNIS CLUB

The annual meeting of the Orepuki Tennis Club was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association club rooms, Mr J. Mason presiding over the following: Mrs Maginness, Misses Morris and Johnston, Messrs Maginness, Clockley and Suddaby (4). The election of office-bearers resulted:—President, Mr J. Mason (re-elect-ed); secretary and treasurer, Mr Maginness (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Messrs R. Lee and T. Suddaby; trustees, Miss Johnston and Mr Lee; club captain, Mr E. Maginness; committee, all present; delegates to subassociation, president and secretary; selectors, Miss Johnston and Mr Maginness. It was decided to lower subscriptions in order to increase the membership. The women’s subscription is to be 6/-, and men’s 10/-; children under 16 years, 2/6 and school children free. As most of the members have enlisted it was decided not to enter a team in the first round of the competition.

Messrs G. and L. Suddaby were thanked for their generous gift of £1 each to the club. A knock-out tournament is to be held on the opening day. The annual report stated: — “The season 1938-39, both from the enjoyment received from the games and competitions and from the financial point of view was very successful. Although there were only 16 financial members, all were keen players, the team putting up a very creditable performance in matches. In the Waiau Tennis Association handicap tournament held on the Orepuki courts, two of our members, Mrs Maginness and Miss D, Young, were successful in winning the women’s doubles and the congratulations of the club are extended to them. This tournament was very successful, there being more than 100 entries. The club has been unfortunate in losing three very good members, Misses M. Hurst, G. Garden and D. Young, who have left the district. The two courts put down in concrete —the assistance of a very energetic working bee enabling the whole job to be done in two days at the approximate cost of £6s—are now considered to be second to none in the Western District. The club appreciates the financial assistance given by the Basketball Club towards the cost of the courts. Donations of £1 each were given by the following: Messrs E. Maginness, E. Brown, L. Suddaby, J. Mason, G. Suddaby and E. Millard, and Mrs Garden gave 10/-. The expenditure for the season has been very heavy, but the greater part will not be recurring. The club will begin the season with a debit balance of £l7/1/3.” The report was adopted. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING The highest score off the rifle at the I Miniature Rifle Club’s shoot was secured by J. Mason with 77.5. C. McKeown won the shoot-off for the handicap button.
