BOWLING CLUB’S OPENING When the Ohai Bowling Club held Its official opening visiting representatives were present from the Invercargill, Otautau, Tuatapere, Winton, Nightcaps and Riverton clubs. This was the first official opening of the club, several friendly games only having been played on the green towards the end of last The green was in good condition and the visitors praised its qualities. Although a cold breeze was blowing those participating enjoyed a fine afternoon’s play- . Mr James Broome, president of the newly-formed Ohai Club, in declaring the green open for play said he was gratified to see such a large and representative gathering and he extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. He especially thanked Messrs D. M. Scandrett, J. C. Thompson and T. D. Pearce for the helpful advice given them when the formation of the club was contemplated. The thanks of the club were also due to the public for its generous support, to the women for their help in social functions and to Mr T. Todd who had given a great deal of time to the improvement and maintenance of the green. The club’s committee had also helped materially in making the club such a success. He was pleased to see present Mr S. C. K. Smith, of Invercargill, who was a member of the Dominion council.
Mr Smith said it was a pleasure to attend the official opening of the Ohai bowling green and he conveyed the congratulations of the New Zealand council to the club. He congratulated the club on the vision shown in establishing such a fine green and said it was an indication of the progress made in the Ohai district. He was quite sure that the Ohai Bowling Club would play its part and contribute in no small measure to the promotion of the sport. Mr H. Gazzard, president of the Southland Centre, expressed pleasure in being able to attend the official opening as he had watched with interest the inauguration of the Ohai Bowling Club.
Mrs J. Broome, wife of the president, then rolled down the first bowl and the green was formally declared open. Visitors and Ohai club members formed the full complement of eight rinks and enjoyable games were played. - TENNIS CLUB’S OPENING The Ohai Tennis Club held its opening day in fine weather. Visitors were present from Balclutha and Aparima clubs. The afternoon was spent in mixed games. RECRUIT BIDDEN FAREWELL A social evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs B. Rushton, Ohai, when Mr C. Cousins, who is leaving for Burnham camp to join the Army was presented with a signet ring by Mr Rushton on behalf of his friends, Mr Cousins was also presented with a fountain pen and pencil at the fortnightly meeting of the R.A.0.8. Lodge. Bro R. N. Murray spoke of Bro Cousins’s long association with them and wished him a safe return to Ohai. Brothers E. W. Hunt, T. Smith, F. J. Edwards and others also extended good wishes. Mr C. Cousins in reply thanked the brethren of the order for their kind remarks.
