PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH INDUCTION OF REV. D. HAY AT ORETI There was a good attendance at the ceremony for the induction of the Rev. D. H. Hay to the charge of the Oreti Presbyterian parish. The Rev. A. M. Ferguson, of Bluff, preached the occasional sermon and the Rev. J. Newlands, Interim Moderator, addressed the minister and congregation. Miss Barker presided at the organ. Following the induction ceremony a social was held in the Oreti Hall, Mr Newlands presiding. The Rev. E. B. Stevenson, of Nightcaps, Moderator of the Southland Presbytery, extended a welcome to Mr Hay and congratulated the parishioners on the eedy settlement. It had been just two months since they had bidden farewell to the Rev. R. Dun. The speaker referred to Mr Hay’s fine record in previous charges and said he felt sure that under his ministry the Oreti church would continue to flourish.

Greetings and best wishes were expressed by the Rev. W. H. Howes, the Rev. J. Burnett (Otautau) and the Rev. G. P. Mitchell (Isla Bank). A welcome was also extended by Mr McLeish on behalf of the session and congregation, ‘Mr J. Findlay (Deacons’ Court and Youth Organizations) and Mrs W. Campbell (Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union). Apologies for absence were received from the Rev. J. Johnstone and the Rev. R. Dun.

Mr Hay expressed thanks for the warmth of the welcome to Mrs Hay and himself and spoke of his school days at Winton and Invercargill. He looked forward with pleasure to the work of the charge and the noted co-operation of the people. A presentation was made to Mr Newlands for his work as interim moderator of the charge during the vacancy. A programme was given by the Winton choir. Mr W. Wilson was the accompanist. MEN’S GOLF The three rounds for the Hamilton Cup, played in conjunction with the men’s championships of the Winton Golf Club, have been completed and the trophy has been won by P. Boylen with a total net score of 213. L. Lindsay was second with 218 and G. King and W. Blach tied for third with 220 each. For the senior and junior championships the following players have qualified:—Senior: L. Lindsay (162), W. Clark (167), G. Lindsay (168), N. G. Pigou (169), O. Smith (170), F. Rawle (172), W. Geary (173); P. Gleeson (174). Junior: P. Boylen (175), W. Balch (177), G. King (184), T. N. Mitchell (188), R. Gow (189), N. Young (193), H. Ward (196), W. Simmers (201). In the first round of the senior championship, Smith beat L. Lindsay, 1 up, Pigou beat Gleeson, 6 and 5 and Clark beat Rawle, 5 and 3. Geary and G. Lindsay have still to play. Balch beat Young, 5 and 3 in the first round of the junior championship. In the second round Balch beat Mitchell by default. The draw for Saturday’s match is as follows:—N. Young v. L. Lindsay, P. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The shooting was not quite up to the usual standard at the Winton Returned Soldiers’ Association’s Miniature Rifle Club’s weekly shoot. The highest score off the rifle was secured by H. Graham with 79.7 and E. Liddell won the handicap badge. Scores off the rifle were: H. Graham 79.7, E. Liddell 78.3, R. Peterson 75.3, O. Smith 75.3, G. Pagan 72.1, G. Gatley 72.2, G. Kettle 74.2, W. Pagan 73.2, W. McDermott 71. Mr R. Peterson, who has acted as assistant secretary to the rifle club for the past two seasons, was bidden farewell by members after the evening’s shoot.

In making a presentation of a fountain pen to Mr Peterson on behalf of the .members, -the secretary (Mr H. Graham) said that the club was very sorry to lose such an active member. Mr Peterson had been a “live” .member and the manner in which he had kept the score book had been a credit to him. He hoped that when Mr Peterson took up his new residence at Gore he would link up with the miniature rifle club there. Mr E. Liddell also wished Mr Peterson every success. In reply, Mr Peterson said that it was very gratifying to know that his efforts had been appreciated. CRIB TOURNAMENT _ Thirty-two players took part in the Winton Returned Soldiers’ Association’s weekly crib tournament. The women’s prize was won by Mrs McCullough (Spar Bush) and the men’s by Mr J. Ledgerwood. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY _A decision to abandon its forthcoming spring show, in view of the petrol restrictions, was made at a meeting of the Winton and District Horticultural Society. LICENSING COMMITTEE Transfers were granted as follows at the quarterly meeting of the Awarua Licensing Committee held at Winton: Benmore Hotel, A. Lambie to J. T.

Martin; Bay View Hotel, Bluff, J. T. Martin to C. A’Court Opie. The chairman (Mr R,. C. Abernethy, S.M.) presided and the members of committee present were: Messrs F. Moore, J. A. Stewart, D. M. Tweedie and W. B. Dixon. TENNIS OPENING At a meeting of the committee of the Winton Tennis Club it was decided to open the season on Thursday, September 28. It was mentioned that the four courts were at present being topdressed.
