BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE-HOLDER DEFEATED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) LONDON, May 24. Features of the third round of the British amateur golf championship, which is being played at Hoylake, were the defeats of the holder of the title, Charles Yates (America), and Hector Thomson, who defeated J. Ferrier in the 1936 final by two holes. The results include the following:— SECOND ROUND Ellsworth Vines (America) defeated £. Ratcliffe, 4 and 3. THIRD ROUND J. Ballieu (Australia) defeated Vines, 2 an d , C. Timmis defeated Hector Thomson, 2 U PJ. Bruen defeated E. Hamilton, 3 and 2. Chapman defeated C. R. Yates (America), 4 and 3. NOTES ON THE MATCHES Some of the results cabled are. distinctly interesting. Ellsworth Vines’s defeat is of no consequence. The former tennis champion is an ardent golfer and very good player, but he is not yet a serious contender for national championships. He was in England for professional tennis engagements and probably regarded it as good fun to “have a fly" in the championship tournament. Hector Thomson’s defeat would not be expected. He was amateur champion in 1936, defeating the Australian, Jim Ferrier, in a magnificent final. C. Timmis., Thomsons conqueror, is one of Britain’s leading amateurs and a well-known intemanational. The Irish lad, J. Bruen, probably the best amateur in Britain today, is almost certainly favourite. for the title. The Hamilton he defeated is no doubt the Scottish amateur champion. The holder of the title, Charles Yates, one of the most popular of the many popular American golfers who have competed in' Britain, has gone under in the third round. Yates won in a blaze of glory at Troon last year, ana after winning the championship sealed his fame by defeating Bruen in the top match of the Walker Cup contest at St Andrews. His defeat at the hands of an opponent who is not one of first flight of British amateurs is characteristic of matches over 18 holes, in which anything can happen. So far as is known there is no other formidable American contender in the field, so that the championship this year will return to British lands.
