NIGHTCAPS DOG TRIALS

Annual Fixture Begins MAIDEN EVENT DECIDED The thirty-sixth annual trials of the Nightcaps Sheep Dog Trials Association were begun yesterday in ideal conditions. Eighteen dogs took part in the first event, which was the only one completed yesterday, and work of a high standard was seen. Mr John Evans, of Invercargill, is the judge. Following are the results:— MAIDEN: HEADING, BRINGING BACK AND HOLDING IN RING, 350 yards. Time limit, Bmin. First prize, £3/3/- and G. W.' Gardner Cup £2/2/-; second prize, £2/2/-; third prize, £l/1/-; fourth prize, A. and T. Burt trophy. J. D. Watson’s Gracie, 56pts 1 A. R. Langford’s Lad, 55pts • 2 A. R. McCorkindale’s Peg, 52pts 3 J. R. Anderson’s Fan, 50pts 4 Gracie cast widely to the right and headed too far off the sheep in lmin. She set for a time before lifting. She pulled steadily on a good line. Her holding in the ring was good and she completed in smin Bsec. Lad, casting to the right a little closely, moved the sheep before heading in 40sec. He pulled on a good line and entered the front of the ring. He let the sheep out of the ring three times and got out of position. He completed in 4min 42sec. Peg cast to the right. The sheep had moved out of position halfway down the hill. She made a good head in 45sec. She lifted carefully, but let the sheep get a little off the line and entered the side of the ring. She was too wide and let the sheep out of the ring several times, completing In 4mm 46sec. Also competed: J. Milne’s Cat 49pts, C K. Harney’s Nell 47, L. Cowie s Fly 46, J. T. Brass’s Kate 46, J. R.
