PRISONERS SENTENCED IN WELLINGTON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 15. The following prisoners were sentenced today in the Supreme Court by Mr Justice Quilliam: Frank Albert Choldcroft, aged 20, a labourer and motor driver, for breaking and entering with intent to steal and attempted breaking and entering, was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention. It was not _ his first offence and the probation officer’s re.port was unfavourable. Graham Gibson Douglas Rhice, a motor salesman and clerk, for failing to account for money, and forgery and uttering was sentenced to two years’ reformative detention. To counsel’s plea, Mr Justice Quilliam responded: “Are you aware that he forged the name of a young girl in the office who might have got into serious trouble. _ He did not scruple to risk the reputation of a young girl by forging her name. He set about in a very deliberate way to rob his employer. He has a bad record and previous convictions. He must pay the penalty for the crime.” Cyril Kempt, aged 28, a theatre manager, on three charges of theft as a servant was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon vzithin two years. “You and your like must learn that crimes of violence are not to be permitted in this country,” said Mr Justice Quilliam in sentencing Howard Lee De Grut, aged 22, a bootmaker and farm labourer, who pleaded guilty to breaking, entering and robbery with violence. The sentence was three years’ hard labour for robbery and two years’ hard labour for breaking and entering.

His Honour also took a serious view of the case of Malcolm Paterson Nicholson, aged 39, a cook and porter, for wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He declared that the use of a knife would not be tolerated in this country.
