LESS MONEY TO BE EXPENDED

Relief For Returned Soldiers NATIONAL WAR FUNDS COUNCIL (Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, December 15. A drastic reduction in the sum to be expended on the relief of sick and wounded and unemployed ex-service-men is being made by the National War Funds Council, according to advice received by the executive of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association. This decision was made, it was stated, because of the council’s depleted resources, the responsibility that would have to be met in the near future, and the greatly improved economic position. “The policy of this relief is to assist sick and unfit men not in receipt of a pension who are unemployed,” the letter said. “Assistance to men travelling from town to town should be curtailed. Allocations are generally, and as near • as possible, based on registrations, and it has been decided that no grant will be allotted where the number of unemployed returned soldiers does not exceed five. It is held that local associations can well care for so small a number out of their own funds.” The letter was received, the president, Sir James Gunson, stating that the council’s decision meant that the association would receive smaller amounts during the year
