Their first official calls on his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway, at Government House were made yesterday by Commodore J. W. Rivett-Carnac, of H.M.S. Leander, and Colonel O. H. Mead, Officer Commanding the Northern Military District. These two officers then exchanged calls on the Leander and at military headquarters respectively. Before Commodore Rivett-Carnac proceeded to Government House he was accorded a salute of 11 guns from North Head.— Press Association.

The Mayor of Dunedin, Mr A. H Allen, was a visitor to Invercargill yesterday. He accompanied a delegation of Dunedin Anglican churchmen which addressed a meeting in St. John’s hall last evening. Mr G. J. L. Hewitt, S.M., chairman of the Railways Appeal Board (First Division), and Messrs J. R. Robertson and J. S. Roscoe, members of the board, will hold a sitting of the board in Invercargill today and will leave tomorrow for the north. Mr J. T. Collins, secretary, Mr A. J. Levick, assistant staff superintendent at Wellington, and Mr V. R. J. Stanley, general secretary of the Railway Officers’ Institute, who arrived in Invercargill on Wednesday night, will also be present at the sitting. Messrs Hewitt, Robertson and Roscoe arrived last evening. Dean Cruickshank, Dean of Dunedin, visited Invercargill yesterday and addressed a meeting of Anglican clergymen and church members in St. John’s Hall last evening. Mr L. S. Alsweiler, who has been elected to represent the Invercargill urban area on the Southland Education Board, was welcomed to yesterday’s meeting of the board by the chairman, Mr S. Rice, who said he was glad that a man of the calibre of Mr Alsweiler had been elected to the board.

Mr A. Kinross, after 12 years on the staff of the St. George school, will next year go to Tisbury on promotion. He was met by the teachers of the St. George school yesterday afternoon and presented with a piece of statuary and a fountain pen by the head teacher, Mr T. V. Haydon. Regret that Mr Kinross was severing his connection with the school was expressed by Mr Haydon, who expressed appreciation of the very capable manner in which Mr Kinross had discharged his duties and referred to his happy relations with the staff. At a social function in the evening Mr T. Walker secretary of the School Committee, presented Mr Kinross with a piece of statuary as a token of the committee’s appreciation of his services.

Mr S. C. K. Smith, Southland representative on the New Zealand Bowling Association, will leave for Auckland by the express tomorrow, morning. He will attend the half-yearly meeting of the council of the association at Auckland in January and will compete in the New Zealand championship tournament at Auckland. Mr D. A. Rutherford, formerly Director of Education in Samoa, who is at present on a holiday visit to Southland, will be the principal speaker at the annual break-up ceremony of the Southland Boys’ . and Girls’ High Schools this evening. Before going to Samoa Mr Rutherford was engaged in the teaching profession in Dunedin where he was a lecturer to the Workers’ Educational Association. During his period of service in Samoa, extending over 18 years, he organized the education system in the various islands and had under his charge approximately 10,000 pupils. Messrs W. E. Earnshaw, J. Simpson and W. D. Jenkin, registrar of the Otago and Southland Diocese of the Anglican. Church, were visitors to Invercargill yesterday.

Mr A. J. Shaw, who has been on the staff of the Middle School for the past 10 years and has been appointed to a higher position at Milton, was met by the staff of the school yesterday and presented with a travelling rug. The presentation was ‘made by the head teacher, Mr G. F. Griffiths, who paid a tribute to Mr Shaw’s book-binding work and to the efficient manner in which he had kept the school records. Messrs W. R. Bishop and R. R. Alderson have been appointed probationers to the City Fire Brigade.
