MATAURA

AMENITIES SOCIETY REVIEW OF PAST YEAR’S ACHIEVEMENTS The annual meeting of the Mataura Amenities Society was presided over by Mr L. McKelvie. There was only a fair attendance of members. The first annual report of the society thanked the citizens of Mataura for their very substantial support, the Mataura Borough Council for its wholehearted co-operation with the society in carrying out the scheme for beautifying the town and the members of the society for supervising such work as has been accomplished. Considerable advance had been made towards carrying out the scheme of work submitted by the society'last year and approved by the council, the report stated. The Railway Department had met the council very fairly and had done a considerable amount of work between the railway station and Bridge street. The plot in front of the railway station had been formed, a concrete edging built round it, and partially planted with narcissi. The section in Kana street south had been sown down in grass and plots made in which various decorative shrubs had been planted. These had done well and in a year or two would prove their worth. The rockery had been planted out with a collection of dwarf rock plants and annuals, and given fair .weather would be very attractive during the summer and autumn. The section adjoining Mr Thorn’s residence in Kana street had been sown down in grass. It was intended, the report continued, to equip it as a children’s playground. “A fair start has been made toward carrying out the plan of work decided at the inception of the society. We hope this will result in a Teater interest in our citizens’ efforts to make the town more attractive to residents and visitors,” the report added. “Continued efforts should be made to get the advertising hoarding at the railway station removed, the plot of ground beside the railway line planted with low growing flowering shrubs and the remainder of the scheme gone on with. It is only by constant adherence to clan that progress can be made; there is plenty to do and we feel sure that during ths coming year the citizens of Mataura will continue to give the society their wholehearted support.” ■ The election of officers resulted: President, Mr Alex Gourley; vicepresidents, Mrs W. P. Thom, Messrs J. Ingram, L. McKelvie, A N. MacGibbon and J. J. Griffiths; secretary, Mr L. H. Bowers; executive, Mesdames C. D. Taylor, J. H. Stalker, H. Thompson, Messrs C. H. Hargest, T. G. Boyd, J. Buchanan, R. Hutton and W. N. Dunnage; auditor, Mr T. G. Boyd. It was decided that subscriptions be the same as last year. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation to Mr J. J. Griffiths for the valuable work he had done during the year under review. RIFLE SHOOTING Members of the Mataura Defence Rifle Club met on the range recently to fixe for the Davis trophy. The ranges to be fired were 300yds and 500yds but as the large target at the 500yds range

would not withstand the boisterous weather it was decided to complete the match by firing a second round at 300yds. Heavy rain and a high wind prevailed throughout the match, causing at least two quite capable riflemen to miss the target altogether on one occasion. T. Gaudion topped the scoring with 94 off the rifle, followed by L. Dickie with 92. Scores:—
